Video Transcript for Using a 1/2 inch Bolt Leader FAQ

All right today, we're going to demonstrate part number 80101-1. This is a half inch bolt leader. Now this part is typically used to install carriage bolts and blocks inside the frame of the vehicle for attachment points for a hitch. We got our hardware here, a typical half inch carriage bolt and a block. We'll go ahead and put those together and then take a bolt leader, also known as a wire pull and put everything together. Now this is the access hole we're going to use, so we'll go ahead and actually take it apart, To thread our bolt through, typically you go head first and then slide the block in. Then we pull everything back through the same hole and that's called a reverse pull. Now the next technique that we show you will be the regular fish wiring a bolt.

Now this is really common. Basically what would happen is this would be our access hole and we'd run this through a hole further up in the frame. In this case, we're going to use these two right close to each other for demonstration purposes. What we'll do is actually take our bolt leader, go through the hole that we want to use, back through our access hole. Then we'll take a block, which typically used, we'll push it in the frame, I like to keep it typically separate, so it can move around independently of the bolt. Plus if there are any obstacles in the way inside the frame, it kind of helps work the wiring.

Then we'll go ahead and take our bolt and put it onto the bolt leader, flip it around again, push it in head first. In certain situations, you may have to work it around like that, just rattle it to get it to work through and then back through the hole you're going to use. There you have it for part number 80101-1.

Bolt leaderExtremely helpful for "threading" bolts through the truck frame.

by:

This was the only site where I could fine this product by itself. Everything was on time and fine.

by:

great tool ... works a whole lot better that my old string method

by:

Bolt leaders make the install so easy. I would hate to have to do a install without a couple of them.

by:

Made the install a snap. You only need one, but two was nice.

by:

Very handy little item. I can't even imagine what trouble I would have encountered trying to fish bolts through my frame without this

by:

This little $1 tool saved a lot of time. Without it, I am sure the frustration level would be way high trying to get the bolt and spacer through one hole and out another.

by:

could not do the job without it but , it came with one so I really didn't need to purchase another . Found that out later.

by:

this little tool can make a seemingly impossible job simple. I'd never seen one before, but I wish I could get one for every size bolt!

by:

excellent product. could not have installed my hitch without it. it was great that this was offered and at such a low price.

by:

It works, I wish it had been a bit longer. Made feeding the bolt easy but I think string fed by a coat hanger could have done the same thing. Unscrewing from the bolt was difficult for some reason. I don't know if it was just me struggling in the hot sun that day but I basically had to yank the thing off the bolts, which stretched it beyond use after the second one. It served it's purpose and it's already in the trash.

  • How to Install Trailer Hitch on Vehicle that is Missing Weld Nuts in Trailer Frame
What you can do is use a bolt leader like # 80101-1 with a carriage bolt block through an open portion of your frame to basically act as a weld nut so you can install the hitch. This normally is a solution we use when a vehicle has a broken weld nut and we have to come up with a way to install the hitch. We made a video on how to do this which I have attached to this page. Best option will be to source a carriage bolt (it will have square shoulders under the head of the bolt) the correct...

  • How to Fix a Weld Nut That Busted Off for a 2016 Toyota 4Runner Skid Plate
Hey Dalton, thanks for reaching out! That sucks. I had the same thing happen to me when I installed a hitch on my 2010 Town and Country - the OEM bolts were rusted in place and I broke one of them off even with all of my efforts to avoid it. We used to have some replacement weld nuts that came with a handle so you could hold them into place, but I don't believe those are made anymore so your best bet is to use a bolt leader like the part # 80101-1 and then get a bolt and spacer to drop...

  • Installing Hitch on 2007 Honda Odyssey With Enlarged Hole/Missing Weld Nut
Hi Sean; so with that larger hole I'm assuming the weld nut is also missing. What you can do is use # 80101-1 along with a spacer block # RP3022 to fill the gap just like you do for the third bolt on the driver side frame rail.

  • How to Install Hitch Receiver on Mitsubishi Outlander that is Missing Weld Nuts in Frame
Yes, we have seen this before and there is a solution so you can still mount your Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # C13163 to your 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander. You will need a bolt leader like item # 80101-1 with a carriage bolt block through an open portion of your frame to basically act as a weld nut so you can install the hitch. I attached a video on how to do this. You will need to source a carriage bolt (it will have square shoulders under the head of the bolt)...

  • How To Install A Trailer Hitch When The Vehicles Factory Weld Nuts Are Ruined
Hello Christopher. Broken weldnuts in the frame can definitely be a pain, but it is still possible to install the 13445 hitch on your 4Runner. What you will do is use a bolt leader like part # 80101-1 to fish the bolts into the frame from a different opening then out through the hitch mounting hole. You will probably have to drill out the factory weldnuts if they are still present. I have linked a video below that shows this process in detail. Do not drill new bolt holes in the hitch. This...

  • How To Install etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver On a 2007 Honda Pilot With Broken Off Weld Nuts
We do not have a specific kit for attaching our etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98851 to your 2007 Honda Pilot with broken weld nuts. The best option would be to have your mechanic weld in some new weld nuts for the M12 - 1.25 hardware used for this receiver. Otherwise we do have the Square Hole Spacers # RP3022 and Bolt Leaders # 80101-1 you would need, but you would need to source the rest of the mounting hardware locally since these will require different carriage bolts.

  • Installing Trailer Hitch on a 2019 Honda Odyssey with Broken Weldnut
Yes, it sounds like you broke something. Specifically one of the weldnuts that are on the inside of your 2019 Honda Odyssey's frame for the trailer hitch's bolts to thread into. It's annoying but not really a huge problem. Although it'll probably cost you a trip to the hardware store. You need a Grade 8 carriage bolt and a washer, nut, and spacer block that fit it. You also need a bolt leader, part # 80101-1. You're first going to need to get the bolt out by breaking off the head....

  • How To Find The Correct Replacement Hardware Kit For Trailer Hitch
If you've broken or lost any of your hardware when installing your hitch all you need is to go to part # RHK, type your hitch item number in and select the manufacturer. This will give you a complete hardware kit to replace yours. You can buy a replacement leader # 80101-1 separately. Sometimes you may need to take a step bit to make the hole a little larger. Other times you can find a lager hole somewhere else and use the bolt leader to fish it down to the smaller hole that way. Be sure...

  • Replacement Spacer Blocks and Bolt Leaders for a Draw-Tite Hitch on a 2010 Subaru Forester
Replacement spacer block # RP3022 is the exact block used in many different trailer hitch installations. Its grade isn't ever specified but hitch hardware is always at least grade 5 and in some cases there is a grade 8 used. It is not stainless steel. The RP3022 is just the block with no other parts included. It looks like there are 2 bolt sizes used to install the Draw-Tite hitches on the 2010 Subaru Forester, # 80103-1 for 7/16 inch bolts and # 80101-1 for 1/2 inch bolts. You would need...

  • Is The Curt C13800 Hitch For A 2001 Mitsubishi Montero A No-Drill Install?
Hello Anibal. I think I might have misunderstood your previous question. The Curt Class 3 Hitch # C13800 is indeed a no-drill installation. There should be 3 holes in the driver side frame rail and two holes on the passenger side. All 5 holes should have a factory installed weldnut inside. I have included a diagram below that shows the location of each hole. It sounds like the factory weldnuts are not there though. If the factory weldnuts are no longer present you can either pay to have...
